Urines and Body Fluids :
Urine is a body fluid used for clinical chemistry testing in the clinical laboratory, in addition to other body fluids. It is tested for things like the following:
Other body fluids may also be analyzed for metabolites of interest or for the origin of the fluid. Fluids include:
Exudate: fluid due to inflammation or injury and has a pretty high protein level (pus)
- kidney (renal) function
- drug testing for drugs of abuse
- therapeutic drug level monitoring
- diabetes (glucose and protein)
- waste products excreted by the kidneys
- metabolites
- sodium and osmolality (urine concentration)
- First Morning Sample
- Commonly ordered when concentrated urine is to be analyzed for the overnight accumulation of metabolites
- Useful for detecting proteins or glucose associated with diabetes
- Random
- Can be collected at anytime
- Convenient
- For routine screening tests, such as annual physicals
- Timed
- 2-8 hours of urine output
- Collected to give a representative sample
- Depends upon which analyte(s) the doctor is looking for
- 24-Hour Urine
- Collected over a 24-hour period in a special jug (ENTIRE urine output must be collected)
- Exactly 1440 minutes
- Useful for metabolites whose excretion rates might vary depending upon the time of day
- The full 24-hour collection is representative
- Aids in kidney function assessment
Other body fluids may also be analyzed for metabolites of interest or for the origin of the fluid. Fluids include:
- CSF
- Protein
- Glucose
- To rule out meningitis
- To rule out MS
- To aid in detection of CVA

- Amniotic Fluid

- Peritoneal Fluid
- Pericardial Fluid
- Pleural Fluid
- Sweat
- Chloride
